Peer Review Process

From Submission to Publication
Peer review refers to the essential evaluation of manuscripts that are submitted to journals by experts who are usually not affiliated with the editorial board. Because unbiased, independent, critical assessment is an intrinsic part of all scholarly work, including scientific research, peer review is an important extension of the scientific process. Peer review often helps authors and editors improve the quality of reporting. It is the responsibility of the journal to ensure that systems are in place for selection of appropriate reviewers.
A peer-reviewed journal is under no obligation to send submitted manuscripts for review, and under no obligation to follow reviewer recommendations, favourable or negative.
The Status of peer-reviewed indicates that the work has been meticulously assessed by experts within the discipline.

Steps in the peer review process:
Manuscript Submission: The process of peer review commences when a researcher submits a manuscript to a scholarly journal.

Assessment by the Editor: The journal's editor conducts a preliminary review to assess whether the manuscript fits the journal's scope and adheres to its editorial criteria.

Reviewer Selection:  Once the manuscript has successfully passed the initial screening, the editor selects a group of up to three reviewers who possess the necessary expertise to assess the manuscript. Afterward, the editor sends the article to peer reviewers who have expertise in the relevant area.

Peer Review Evaluation: Throughout the peer review process, reviewers systematically review the manuscript’s content, methodology, Results, originality, and significance. The selected reviewers After reviewing the manuscript, providing constructive observations, highlighting any weaknesses, and recommending potential improvements. The review is then submitted to the journal editor, with a recommendation to accept or reject the paper or with a request for revision. The review process is usually conducted within a specific time frame.
Blind Peer Review: The reviewers' identities are kept confidential from the authors. This method is referred to as double-blind review, which ensures that the authors' identities are also concealed from the reviewers. In double-blind peer review, the identities of both authors and reviewers are concealed. This anonymity is intended to reduce bias and promote fairness in the evaluation process.
Reviewers provide feedback on the following:

  • Originality of the research and its contribution to the field
  • Methodology used in the study
  • Results and their interpretation
  • Clarity and structure of the paper
  • Missing references or supporting data etc.

Editor’s Decision: Utilizing the reviewer reports, the editor formulates a decision on the acceptance of the manuscript for publication, the necessity for revisions, or its rejection. This decision is communicated to the author, usually by e-mail.

The decision can be categorized into several types, such as:

  • Acceptance: The manuscript is accepted for publication without requiring major revisions.
  • Minor revisions: The manuscript needs minor modifications and improvements before it can be finally accepted.
  • Major revisions: The manuscript requires extensive revisions and further evaluation before a final decision is made.
  • Rejection: The manuscript is not suitable for publication in the journal

Revision and resubmission: When the first editorial decision is favourable but not full acceptance, authors have the option of revising their manuscript and resubmitting it to the same journal, as well as providing detailed response to the reviewer’s comments.

Final Acceptance and Publication: After the manuscript meets the necessary standards and all revisions are completed, the paper is accepted for publication. The article is then formatted for publication and is presented in the peer-reviewed journal.
